Risks
- The snippet supplied in chat contained Markdown-link formatting and escaped HTML delimiters; copying it literally would produce invalid markup.
- A provider or hostname mismatch would prevent dashboard data from appearing.
- Privacy wording must describe aggregate analytics without claiming that the site owner can identify individual visitors.
- The local Windows environment has previously lacked a usable Jekyll executable, so a full local render may remain unavailable.
Task Steps
- Inspect the existing analytics call chain, privacy page, repository guidance, and working-tree state.
- Normalize the supplied snippet to valid HTML and add it to the existing custom-provider include.
- Enable the custom provider in Jekyll configuration.
- Update the public privacy disclosure.
- Add a maintainer-facing analytics guide and link it from the repository README.
- Run focused source checks and attempt the repository’s Jekyll build without installing or changing dependencies.
- Review the final diff and prepare an exact commit scope and suggested message without committing.
Implementation Plan
Use the theme’s existing analytics extension point rather than editing layouts or adding a new dependency. Keep GitHub Pages as the host and load the Cloudflare beacon site-wide through _includes/scripts.html → _includes/analytics.html → the custom provider include.
Progress Updates
- Confirmed the working tree was clean before the analytics edits.
- Confirmed the site already routes a
customprovider to_includes/analytics-providers/custom.html. - Converted the escaped, Markdown-formatted snippet into valid HTML while preserving the supplied beacon URL and site token.
- Enabled the custom provider, updated the privacy disclosure, and added the access guide.
Final Implementation Results
- Enabled the theme’s
customanalytics provider without changing layouts, JavaScript bundles, dependencies, DNS, or GitHub Pages hosting. - Added the supplied Cloudflare beacon once in the custom analytics include after removing chat escaping and Markdown-link syntax.
- Replaced the obsolete no-analytics privacy language with a Cloudflare-specific disclosure and retained an explicit statement that Google Analytics is not enabled.
- Added
docs/analytics-guide.mdwith dashboard access, metrics, interpretation guidance, current limitations, deployment verification, security notes, and disable/replace instructions. - Linked the guide from the repository README and recorded the change in the high-level website index.
Verification Notes
passed—git diff --checkfound no whitespace errors. Git emitted only the repository’s existing LF-to-CRLF working-copy warnings.passed— Ruby’s YAML parser loaded_config.ymland confirmedanalytics.provider == "custom".passed— Focused source checks confirmed exactly one supplied beacon token, exactly one Cloudflare beacon URL, and no escaped-HTML or Markdown-link artifacts in the custom include.passed— The existing Liquid call chain still maps thecustomprovider to_includes/analytics-providers/custom.htmland is loaded by_includes/scripts.html.blocked—bundle exec jekyll buildcould not run because the checkout’s installed Ruby bundle does not provide thejekyllexecutable (bundler: command not found: jekyll). No dependency installation was authorized or performed.not_run— A live GitHub Pages deployment and Cloudflare dashboard receipt cannot be checked before the user reviews, commits, and pushes the prepared change.not_run—npm run build:jswas unnecessary because no first-party JavaScript source or bundle was changed.
